Sinaia - Historical monuments

Of all historical monuments, you can visit: Peles Castle, built between 1875-1883 in a Renaissance German style, with Gothic elements; Sinaia Convent, founded between 1690-1695 by Mihai Cantacuzino boyar, George Enescu Memorial House, a.s.o.

PELES COMPLEX
An important location which should not be missed is Peles Castle. This is one of the most well preserved royal castles from Europe. It was used as summer residence for the first Hohenzollern king of Romania, Carol I. Built in the second half of the XIX- th century, the building represents the king’s attempt to imitate the style from its birth country, by making a Bavaria assembly in the Romanian’s mountains. The castle is richly adorned both inside and outside with complicated wood sculptures and paintings reproducing parts from Wagner’s operas. Details

SINAIA CONVENT
Before the Second World War and the royal family’s abdication, Sinaia represented the place where the Romanian aristocracy spent its summer time. The first place worthy of being visited in the resort was Sinaia Convent. It still is an active monastery, with buildings dating from 1695. The monks who live here are in the majority very old, wearing traditional clothes and very willing to show the surroundings and answer any question you may ask. Many of them speak German as well as Romanian language. Details

GEORGE ENESCU MEMORIAL HOUSE
It is located in the Cumpatu district, the only district of Sinaia situated on the right side of the Prahova river. In the brilliant destiny of George Enescu, the Sinaia town and “Luminis” villa had a special significance. George Enescu organized his life as, in-between the concerts, to rest and compose in “Luminis” villa from Sinaia. The villa was built on purpose in Sinaia, because Enescu was connected both sentimentally and professionally to this town, due to the Elizabeth queen’ support, the Peles Castle being for him a launching gate towards the musical cultural life of the time. details
